Bergamot is small citrus tree native to South East Asia. Its name comes from the small town of Bergamo in Italy where the essential oil was first sold. Bergamot is a close relative of the Bitter Orange tree, and produces a small fruit that turns from green to yellow in colour when ripe. Unlike other citruses the fruit is inedible as it is so sour! The essential oil is produced from the peel of the nearly-ripe fruit and has a fresh sweet-fruity aroma with slightly spicy-balsamic undertones that is popular with both men and women.

Bergamot essential oil is renowned for its refreshing and uplifting qualities. Known as "Natures Prozac" it is one of the most popular aromatherapy oils for easing anxiety, stress, depression, nervous tension, over-emotional feelings, and physical and mental agitation. It is also helpful when stress or pressure affects the stomach and digestion. It's a powerful anti-viral, antiseptic and antibacterial agent with a particular affinity for the respiratory tract and the genito-urinary system. It can also be beneficial for a variety of skin complaints.

Bergamot is used extensively as a fragrance and is a key ingredient in the classic Eau de Cologne. It is also used for flavouring Earl Grey Tea.

Safety Note:	Avoid massage if skin very sensitive. Bergamot oil can cause burns when used on sensitive skin which is then exposed to sunlight, as the high content of bergaptene* can cause photo-toxicity. It is advisable to keep out of the sun after use on the skin.
Skin:	Bergamot essential oil has antiseptic properties that are beneficial for wounds and skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. It can also be helpful for oily skin and cold sores.
Mind:	Bergamot oil is very good for lifting the spirits and treating stress, depression, nervous anxiety and work-related tension. It is also often recommended when treating the symptoms Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Body:	Bergamot essential oil is one of the best antiseptic aromatherapy oils for treating cystitis, urinary tract infections and bacterial stomach upsets. It can also be beneficial for respiratory problems such as colds, flu and sore throats, and can help to settle the digestive system and regulate the appetite.

* Bergaptene (Furocoumarin) is the chemical constituent which may cause skin to turn slightly brown in sunlight (hence it was the main ingredient of Bergasol sun tanning lotions). The effect however can be very uneven so this oil should not be used on the skin prior to sun exposure. Base Formula also supply Bergamot essential oil with the Bergaptene removed (Bergamot FCF).

Uplifting diffuser blend

Add 5 drops Bergamot, 3 Geranium, 2 Benzoin to a burner or diffuser.

Relaxing bath oil for stress, anxiety and sadness

80ml Bath Oil, 15 drops Bergamot, 10 Lavender, 8 Ylang Ylang, 8 Geranium and 4 Neroli. Shake well before use and add 5-10ml per bath.

Anti-viral diffuser blend

Vaporise 10 drops Bergamot and 5 Tea Tree to help neutralise air-borne bugs.

Reviving bath soak for coughs and colds

Mix 4 drops Bergamot, 2 Rosemary, 2 Tea Tree and 1 Eucalyptus with 20ml Bath Oil or Shower Gel and add to the bath. Do not use just prior to bed as the oils are quite stimulating. Can also be used in a foot bath.

Massage oil for eczema (for use on adults)

80ml Sweet Almond Oil, 10ml Hazelnut Oil, 5ml Avocado Oil, 5 Red Carrot Oil, 10 drops Lavender, 10 Bergamot and 4 German Chamomile. Shake well before use and apply regularly after a bath or shower. Patch test prior to use.

Bath soak for cystitis

Mix 1 cup of Dead Sea Salt with 15ml Bath Oil, 4 drops Bergamot, 4 Tea Tree, 4 Lavender and 2 Myrrh and dissolve in a warm bath. This will help to act on the infection and soothe symptoms.
