Cajeput (Melaleuca cajeputi) also known as cajuput is a medium to tall evergreen tree with white spongy bark, pointed leaves and spikes of white or greenish flowers. It grows vigorously in Australia and South-East Asia and takes its name from the Malaysian ‘caju-puti’ which translates as ‘white-wood’, referring to the colour of the timber.

Cajeput is closely related to other members of the Melaleuca group (a sub-species of the Myrtaceae family), notably Clove, all of the Eucalyptuses, Myrtle, Niaouli and Tea Tree. The tree is highly regarded in the East and has traditionally been used for treating colds, throat infections, headaches, tooth ache and rheumatism. The Australian Aborigines crushed the leaves and twigs to treat aches and pains and inhaled vapours from the crushed leaves to treat respiratory infections. In Thailand, the leaves were used in herbal teas to treat a variety of complaints.

Cajeput essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs and has a pale greenish-yellow colour which distinguishes it from some of the other varieties of Melaleuca. The green colour is derived from traces of copper contained in the tree. The oil has a penetrating, camphoraceous, medicinal aroma that has a stimulating, slightly cooling, head-clearing effect when inhaled. It has slightly milder, fruitier notes than Eucalyptus and Tea Tree, which makes it a popular choice when a more pleasant fragrance is required.

Like other family members, Cajeput is particularly known for its antiseptic, antimicrobial and expectorant properties and is often used in inhalations for colds and other respiratory infections.
