Sandalwood is a small tree with grey bark, leathery leaves and pinky-purple flowers. The tree is native to tropical Asia and India is the main producer of Sandalwood essential oil which is steam distilled from the powdered heartwood and major roots. Overharvesting and deforestation have led to a serious decline in wild Sandalwood and because of the threat of extinction the production of this oil is now very well controlled.
Sandalwood has been treasured for thousands of years. Many temples were built from the wood and the Egyptians used the oil for embalming. Today, Sandalwood is widely used in the perfume industry for its gentle, calming, erotic fragrance which is popular with both men and women.
