Ylang Ylang is produced from the cananga tree which is a tall evergreen tree that is grown in Madagascar, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Reunion. The tree produces large yellow and white flowers that have a powerful, fragrant scent. The essential oil is steam distilled from the tree's flowers and the yellow flowers are believed to produce the best oil. A single distillation of Ylang Ylang is interrupted at four different times to produce four different grades of essential oil - Ylang Ylang Extra, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3.
We supply three different grades of Ylang Ylang oil. The Extra essential oil comes from the first extraction. It is more concentrated than other grades and it contains the highest amount of esters, which gives it the sweetest aroma. Our Organic Grade 1 oil comes from the 2nd distillate and has a slightly less-sweet aroma than the Extra. Ylang Ylang Grade 2 comes from the 3rd distillate and again has a less-sweet aroma than the Grade 1.
Ylang Ylang is much used in the perfume industry for its exotic fragrance. In Malayan, 'Ylang Ylang' means "flower of flowers", which suits its sweet fragrance. It is also known as 'poor man's Jasmine'!
In aromatherapy Ylang Ylang is used for its sedative, antidepressant, euphoric and aphrodisiac properties. It acts as a tonic for the nervous and circulatory systems, and can help to reduce high blood pressure and heart palpitations. It also control the production of sebum and can be generally used to help balance and regulate body functions.
