Citric Acid  is a natural non-sensitising ingredient derived from fruit sugars which softens water, nurtures the skin and is a natural preservative. Citric Acid is often used in combination with sodium bicarbonate, as a key ingredient in bath bombs and bath melts — the combination of the two produces carbon dioxide, producing a pleasantly effervescent water.

One of the main benefits of Citric Acid is that it is natural and poses little to no risk to the environment. Very few people are allergic to Citric Acid. It also has preservative properties which makes it a useful ingredient if you choose to make your own toiletries or cosmetics.

Citric Acid can vary hugely in quality and if you are making your own products it is important to use a premium, skin-kind quality. The Citric Acid sourced and selected for you by the experts at Base Formula blends easily and fluidly without creating a gritty feeling in the final product.

Basic Bath Bomb Recipe

You will need:-
Bicarbonate Soda - 500g
Citric Acid - 250g
Corn Starch - 100g
Witch Hazel approx 50ml
Food Colouring - if required
Essential oils – up to 5mls total
Moulds (silicon moulds recommended)

Blend the dry ingredients together very thoroughly (use a sieve or a mixer). Add food colouring and essential oils into to the Witch Hazel and place in a spray bottle. Now, this is the difficult part. Spritz (with the spray bottle) the Witch Hazel onto your batch while stirring with the other hand. When your batch sticks together when squished, you need to start putting it in the moulds – time is of the essence. If you wait too long, the mixture will get hard. If you spritz too much, the mixture will be too wet and "grow” and the fizzing reaction will begin. Put the bombs in moulds – wait a few minutes and tap them out. Let them air dry for 3 or 4 hours and you will have amazing bath bombs. The harder you pack the bath bombs, the more dense, heavy, and durable bomb you will get.

Bath Creamers (like small golf balls)

You will need:-
600g Bicarbonate Soda
300g Citric Acid
100g of Cocoa Butter
50g Shea Butter
50ml Almond Oil
300g Citric Acid
100gm Corn Flour
1.5ml of essential oil or fragrance
Botanicals (petals etc) laid out in cling film

Mix the dry ingredients thoroughly. Melt the Cocoa Butter in a bain-marie then add the Shea Butter. Add the fragrance ingredients to the melted butters. Add the wet products to the dry and wearing gloves gently combine. Roll into golf ball sized shapes and roll them on the botanicals (contained on a cling film sheet). Leave to cool. Note: the level of skin nurturing butter in this product will make the bath slippery.
