Lemongrass is a fast-growing, tall, aromatic, perennial grass which grows up to 1.5m high. Lemongrass is native to southern India, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and Guatemala but is also cultivated in Brazil and parts of Central Africa. Lemongrass essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the fresh or partially dried, finely chopped grass.

Lemongrass is a wonderfully rich and pungent oil that energises the mind and body. It has been used in many Eastern cultures for thousands of years as an accompaniment to meditation and prayer. It is used extensively in India and Pakistan as a medicine for infectious illness and fevers and as an insecticide.

In modern aromatherapy it is sometimes known as the 'connective tissue' oil, because it helps to tighten and tone the skin and connecting tissues. This makes it particularly useful for sports massage and treating sprains and strains.

Lemongrass also makes a beautiful room freshener and deodorant especially when combined with floral oils such as Geranium.
