  • Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a hardy, perennial herb native to the Mediterranean. It reaches about 1m in height and has bright, green, sharply serrated leaves and spikes of pink or lilac-coloured flowers. The Latin name ‘Mentha spicata’ literally means ‘spiky mint’ and the name ‘spearmint’ has been derived from the plants spear-shaped leaves. Spearmint essential oil is extracted from the plant’s flowering tops by steam distillation.

The medicinal properties of Spearmint have long been recognised. The  Ancient Greeks used it to fragrance their bath water and to treat infectious skin diseases such as scabies, dermatitis and athlete's foot. In medieval times Spearmint was used to heal sore gums and whiten teeth and it was also added to drinking water to prevent contamination during long voyages.
Today, Spearmint is valued all over of the world as a culinary herb and it is the mint that is most often used in Britain for cooking.

Spearmint essential oil has similar therapeutic properties to Peppermint but is a lot milder, so is more suited to people with sensitive skin or for children. It is an excellent substitute for Peppermint if you are concerned that Peppermint may overpower a blend or be a bit too stimulating. It can either be used as a total substitute or can be used alongside Peppermint to soften the blend.

    Safety Note:
    Non-toxic.

    Skin:

Spearmint has a soothing, cooling effect on the skin. It can help to reduce redness and inflammation and calm irritation and itchiness. It is good to use in a facial steam to deeply cleanse and decongest the skin, particularly where acne is present. Spearmint contains far less menthol than Peppermint and is therefore a good choice for people with sensitive skin or for children.
