Balsam of Peru is a large, tropical tree with a straight, smooth trunk, beautiful foliage and very fragrant flowers. It thrives mainly along the Balsam Coast where El Salvador meets the Pacific Ocean, but it also grows wild throughout Central America, southern Mexico, and in parts of northern South America.

Peru Balsam is the thick brown resin that is found in the trunk of the tree. The resin is extracted by making a V-shaped incision in the bark. The resin seeps out, dries and is scraped off and purified.

This crude balsam or resin has a thick, tar-like consistency that can be difficult to work with in aromatherapy.

Our resin-free Peru Balsam essential oil has been extracted from the crude balsam by high vacuum distillation to give a pourable viscosity. It is pale brown/amber in colour with a rich, balsamic, slightly spicy, sweet, vanilla aroma and smoky undertones.

Peru Balsam has been used for centuries for a multitude of skin disorders, rheumatism, respiratory conditions, and as an antiseptic and fungicide. The Indians of Central and South America used the balsam to stop bleeding and to promote healing. They also used the leaves as a diuretic and to expel parasites.

Peru Balsam is commonly used as a fixative and fragrance component in soaps, detergents, creams, lotions and perfumes.

I have previously written a review on this oil but it has since disappeared! I bought this a good while ago for its properties and I like to try new and different oils rather than sticking to the most common ones, but wasn't particularly keen on Peru Balsam. I found it's vanilla undertone to be a little sickly and it didn't mix well with the other essential oils as it's more solid, I tried warming it in my hands and the majority of it stuck to my hands and nails, so I wasn't able to transfer it very well on to the clients skin. I even had to use a nail brush and soap to remove it from my nails! For personal use it's probably fine, but when using professionally with clients it's not one I'd personally recommend.

Dear Caz

Thank you for your comments. We have only received one other review for this product which dates back to 2016 and is listed under the name 'Holistic'. The comments are virtually identical to yours so we wonder if this is your original review?

You do say you purchased the oil a while ago, and without your full name, we are unable to trace the original order. We do however think that you may have purchased the Peru Balm resin which we supplied some time ago. This is a very thick resin, which is quite tricky to work with and needs to be heated prior to use (it may also help to warm the carrier oil that you're diluting the oil into). For practical purposes we now only sell the resin-free Peru Balsam essential oil which has been distilled from the crude balsam to give a pourable consistency. We hope this helps explain. Please feel free to contact us by email if you wish to discuss this further.

Kind regards

I wanted another base note to add to my collection. The smell is quite pleasant, a slight sweet vanilla aroma comes to mind, but I didn't get on well with this essential oil. I found it far too thick as it's from a tree resin, it didn't blend in to or with the other oils; it remained almost a solid and when trying to warm it in my hands, it stuck to my fingers and nails, rather than the clients skin! Only a nail brush & soap after the treatment removed it! Others may like it, so give it a try, but it's not for me.
