Manuka essential oil has a fresh, spicy, herbaceous aroma with sweet, gentle undertones. It is similar to Tea Tree but has a more pleasant aroma. Manuka is particularly beneficial for the skin and for coughs and colds.

The Manuka plant is native to New Zealand and southeast Australia. It is a bushy, shrub with flowers that are particularly attractive to bees (Manuka honey can be used for external healing properties as it contains some of therapeutic chemicals found in the essential oil). The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs with the best oil coming from plants that are grown at high altitude (high altitude plants are more antibacterial than those grown at lower altitude).
Manuka has long been used by the Maori people of New Zealand for bronchitis, rheumatism and other similar conditions. Manuka essential oil is similar to Tea Tree oil but with extra properties. It is a also good alternative to Tea Tree when a more pleasant and less medicinal smell is required.
