Inula, also known as stinkwort and camphor inula, is a bushy, aromatic annual herb with dandelion-like flowers. Native to the Mediterranean, it is considered a noxious weed and is now commonly found on roadsides, areas of wasteland and overgrazed pastures across Europe, the Middle East and in other temperate areas worldwide.
Inula essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops of the plant and is pale yellow in colour (unless distilled in a copper still, which results in a beautiful green colour). It has a lovely, fresh, sweet-camphoraceous aroma with subtle hints of Chamomile. Unlike other camphoraceous oils this beautiful, slightly floral-sweetness gives it a really unique scent that isn’t overpowering or overly medicinal.
Inula has powerful mucolytic, antitussive and bronchospasmolytic properties and is considered by many aromatherapists to be the best essential oil for supporting a variety of respiratory conditions. It is also known for its adaptogenic (stress-relieving), sedative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties.

No known cautions or contraindications. This oil should not be confused with Inula helenium (Elecampane) which is a severe dermal sensitiser and not recommended for use in aromatherapy.
Inula’s antibacterial, soothing, anti-inflammatory properties can be helpful for inflamed skin conditions, rashes and acne. It is also thought to aid in the healing of wounds.
The oil has a calming effect on the nervous system which may help to relieve stress, anxiety and feelings of panic. It may also encourage more restful sleep.
Known as the ‘strongest’ mucolytic essential oil, Inula is excellent for respiratory problems such as coughs, colds, bronchitis, flu, other catarrhal conditions of the upper respiratory tract (nose and throat) and spasmodic conditions such as asthma. It can support the immune system in preventing and fighting-off infection and its anti-inflammatory, analgesic properties can be helpful in blends for sore, inflamed joints. Also thought to be a heart tonic.
