Lavender essential oil is distilled from the blue, flowering spikes of the lavender shrub. The plant is widely cultivated in Europe and a hybrid called Lavendin grows wild in the Mediterranean area. The lavender plant has been used in medicine since ancient times, and was first introduced to England by the Romans. The name Lavender actually comes from the Roman word "lavera”, meaning to cleanse, as they used it frequently in their bathing rituals.
