Aromatherapy Massage Waxes

Our expertly blended, professional-grade massage waxes offer an excellent alternative to traditional massage oils, creams and lotions. Handmade with 100% pure and natural ingredients these semi-solid, no-spill waxes are designed to melt on application to the skin, giving the same slippage as a massage oil but with enhanced grip and control. The skin nurturing formula contains Sunflower Seed oil, Coconut oil and Beeswax to nourish and protect the skin. We also add carefully chosen, beautifully fragrant essential oils to enhance the therapeutic properties of our Relaxing and Muscles wax. Alternatively, our Unscented Massage Wax can be used if you or your client require an unfragranced product, or if you wish to add your own blend of essential oils. Unlike other waxes on the market ours are suitable for people with nut allergies. See our product pages for more information or scroll to the bottom of this page to read more.

Benefits of using a massage wax

Base Formula’s massage wax is semi-solid at room temperature making it easy to dispense and apply with no spills or waste. It melts on contact with warm skin and offers the same slippage as a traditional massage oil but with enhanced control. The addition of Beeswax gives a firmer grip for deep tissue work and friction techniques when used sparingly, and, if you apply the wax more generously it will give a lovely, smooth flow for gentler massage techniques.

How do I use the massage wax

To prevent contamination and maximise shelf-life, we recommend using a clean spatula or spoon to scoop out the required amount into a small glass bowl. A little goes a long way, so it is best to start with a small amount and add more as required. You will soon get used to gauging the optimum amount to use.

Can I add essential oils to the unscented wax?

Base Formula's Unscented Massage Wax is ideal for making your own aromatherapy massage waxes. You will need to gently melt the wax in a bowl over a pan of simmering water, or in the microwave on the lowest heat. Once melted, add your essential oils and stir thoroughly to ensure that they are fully emulsified. Pour into your container and leave to cool and reset.

How do I store this product?

The wax can generally be stored at room temperature. The antibacterial and antioxidant Beeswax along with the Vitamin E in the Sunflower oil will help to prevent the product from going off. Ensure that you keep it away from heat sources and direct sunlight. If the room gets very warm (over 23°C) the wax can be kept in the fridge to keep it in a solid state – this will also help prolong its shelf-life.  Another handy tip from Bob Bramah, Chartered Physiotherapist and Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Physiotherapy at Salford University, is to keep your massage wax in the freezer during extreme temperatures. He used this technique while working with the English Cricket Team in the West Indies. Our wax doesn’t contain any water, so you’ll still be able to scoop it out, as it won’t be frozen solid.

With correct storage and care the wax should last for a period of 12 months once opened.

More about our wax ingredients

  • Sunflower Seed oil (Helianthus annuus) is rich in skin nurturing fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E. It is easily absorbed into the skin, helping to improve skin hydration and antioxidant protection.
  • Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera) nourishes and hydrates the skin and helps fight free radical damage. It also has antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties which protect against skin infection.
  • Beeswax (Cera alba) forms a protective, breathable layer on the skin’s surface which locks in moisture and leaves the skin feeling hydrated, soft and supple. It has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, and is also thought to have a slightly warming action on the skin.
  • Our Relaxing Massage Wax contains pure essential oils of Lavender, Frankincense, Neroli, Palmarosa and Sandalwood to calm and relax both mind and body.
  • Our Muscles Massage Wax contains a therapeutic blend of Clary Sage, Marjoram, Lavender and Rosemary which are particularly soothing for the muscles and joints.

Are our massage waxes suitable for people with nut allergies?

Unlike other waxes on the market, we do not use Sweet Almond Oil or other nut oils in our blend, which makes our wax suitable for people with nut allergies. Although we use Coconut oil this is classed as a dry drupe, not a botanical nut. It is quite rare for people with tree nut allergies to also be allergic to coconut.
