Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a perennial herb with broad, hairy leaves and small pinky-purple, blue or white bell-shaped flowers. It is native to Europe where it tends to grow in damp, grassy areas like riverbanks and ditches. It can also be found in North America and Western Asia.
Comfrey roots and leaves have long been used for medicinal purposes in teas, tinctures, ointments and compresses, although internal consumption is now discouraged due to its potentially toxic effects on the liver.
Our Comfrey oil is produced by infusing the plant's leaves in Sunflower Seed Oil. The resulting oil contains high levels of allantoin, a substance that stimulates new cell growth and helps injured cells to 'knit' back together. This makes Comfrey particularly useful for the topical treatment of superficial wounds, scars, infections and other skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and even nappy rash.
Infused Comfrey oil also has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that are beneficial for sore muscles and joints, sprains, strains, bruises, and even broken bones (in England, Comfrey is sometimes referred to as 'boneset' or 'knitbone').
Comfrey oil should only be used for external application as it contains chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids, that in large quantities, can damage the liver.
Our infused Comfrey oil should only be applied in small amounts to unbroken skin. It should not be applied to deep or open wounds as the oil may encourage the outer skin to heal at a faster rate than the tissue beneath, result in an abscess or infection.
Use at 20% dilution in all massage oils for those with eczema or dermatitis (can be helpful for psoriasis too) but always do a skin patch test on sensitive skin first.
