Hyssop essential oil is extracted from Hyssopus officinalis a herb that grows mainly in the Mediterranean region. Hyssop essential oil is extracted from the plant’s leaves and flowers by steam distillation.

In ancient times Hyssop was known as a Holy or Sacred herb because of its disinfectant and antimicrobial properties. It is even mentioned in the Old Testament, where it was used as a purifier. It was used in the Middle Ages to purify sacred places and ward off lice and the Benedictine monks first introduced it to Europe in the 10th century as an ingredient for liqueurs. Today, Hyssop is still used as a key ingredient in a number of liquors, including Benedictine and Chartreuse.
