Monday, May 16th, 2011

Ruler: Venus
Colour: Green
Element: Earth
Season: Autumn
Essential Oils: Palmarosa, Ylang Ylang and Rose

The Taurus Personality

The second sign of the Zodiac, Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of love and desire. A strong and solid sign, Taurus governs practicality and security. Taureans are easy to understand. What you see is what you get. They are reliable, practical, perservering and tend to be rather stubborn. They are not known for snap decisions and no-one can force them into anything with giving them due time for thought and consideration. They are easily worried, sometimes irritated by things, quick to anger but equally as quick to apologise.

If a Taurean is on your side, they make wonderfully kind and generous friends and capable colleagues. Taureans have a passionate nature and a strong sense of loyalty and fidelity. They take relationships very seriously and make safe and reliable partners. They can appear a little subdued or aloof as they tend to hide their true feelings, but they have a fine sense of humour, and enjoy their social life.

Taurus is a feminine sign and very magnetic. Taureans are sensuous, attractive and creative individuals, often with a flair for design and a love of music (many famous singers are Taureans). They love expensive things and don’t mind working hard for their money. This appreciation of the finer things in life can however may make them seem somewhat materialistic or snobby.

Taurus also loves nature and natural things. They like to potter in the garden, and enjoy other outdoor activities such as picnics, hikes, trips to botanical gardens or the zoo.

Palmarosa, Ylang Ylang and Rose have Venus as their ruling planet and the sweet, grounded, balancing qualities of these floral essential oils makes them ideal choices for Taureans. Rose and Ylang Ylang essential oils also embody the Taurean love of luxury and earthly delights.

Palmarosa

Palmarosa is a balancing, soothing and refreshing essential oil. It is much used in skin-care preparations for its lovely fragrance, sebum balancing and hydrating properties. It is suited to all skin types but is especially good for dry or slightly damaged skin. Palmarosa is a good digestive stimulant and its calming, uplifting and comforting properties are beneficial for treating stress, anxiety and restlessness.

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang essential oil has intensely sweet, almond floral top notes with exotic, woody undertones. It is a soothing, erotic and euphoric essential oil that is soothing for the mind, body and skin. It can be beneficial for oily skin, high blood pressure, depression, and insomnia.

Rose

Although it is expensive, Rose is one of the best all-purpose essential oils for your collection. Rose is a tender, uplifting and soothing oil. It not only helps fight depression, grief, anger and fear, but it is also a tonic for the heart and digestive system. Rose is also the first choice for helping with female-related problems and is one of the best essential oils to use on the skin.

Aromatherapy Star Sign – Aries (21 March – 20 April)

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Ruler:
Mars
Colour: Scarlet
Element: Fire
Season: Summer
Essential oils: Basil, Black Pepper and Rosemary

The Aries Personality

The Aries star sign is fiery, warm, passionate and expressive, with an urge to act now. Aries is the first star sign of the zodiac – the seed, the start, the initiator; and where Aries leads others can only follow. Arians tend to be honest and straightforward with a strong, sometimes overwhelming enthusiasm for life. No matter what upheaval or challenge they confront  Aries has a wonderful ability to bounce back, and their faith in life and the future remains untouched by hardship.

Arians are outgoing and thrive on challenge. They’ve got heaps of energy and are very adventurous, competitive and determined. They have to come first in everything and are bad losers if they don’t. Many famous sports people are born under this sign. Arians like to supervise and organise rather than actually ‘do’ and therefore make good leaders or politicians. They are intelligent, decisive and quick to think and act. They can become impatient with the ‘detail’ and have little time for fools. They can also be impulsive and sometimes reckless – acting first and thinking later. Their fiery nature and hot temper means they can pick a furious row one minute then walk away and forget all about it a moment later!

Aries cannot help but to put themselves first as they pursue their own interests and they seldom realize that what they are doing might overwhelm or upset others. They can often, therefore, be seen as selfish, but this is more an oversignt rather than anything intentional. Despite this Arians make fantastic friends as they are extremely friendly, cheerful, kind and generous.

Cephalic essential oils such as Rosemary, Basil and Black Pepper are good choices for Aries as they help to keep their busy minds clear and alert!!

Basil
Basil essential oil is renowned as a stimulating oil and can be used to clarify thoughts and counteract intellectual fatigue. It is also recommended for head tension and makes a warming inhalation for the chest.

Black Pepper
Black Pepper has been used for over 4000 years for its tonic effect on the muscles and joints and for its uplifting effect on the mind. This warming, spicy essential oil is also ideal for use after sport or any strenuous activity to relieve sore muscles and fatigue.

Rosemary
Rosemary has an energising effect and can be used to aid concentration. It is also popular in winter time for respiratory problems and is often used in aromatherapy blends for the joints and muscles.

Element: Water
Season: Winter
Essential oils: Bergamot, Jasmine and Frankincense

The Pisces Personality

The sign for Pisces shows two fish swimming in opposite directions, and this is symbolic of the Pisces nature. Pisces is a sign that is pulled in two directions and is always trying to balance. Pisceans sometimes appear fickle or unreliable because they can be very different characters from one day to the next and change their minds frequently. Pisceans are highly intuitive and emotionally intense. They switch easily between emotional highs and lows and they are easily affected by the emotions and moods of others. They are very sensitive to environments and need to be careful where they live and who they choose to spend their time with. Pisceans are kind hearted and will do anything to help people in need. In fact they tend to sacrifice their own needs over others and will do anything to avoid conflict or hurting someone’s feelings. They are sometimes gullible and can be easily deceived or used by people who take advantage of their kind nature. They may then become depressed and disillusioned if they feel someone has cheated them or betrayed their kindness. Pisceans have natural healing abilities, which often leads them into medicine, nursing or complementary therapies. Pisceans love to dream. They are very creative and artistic people and their imagination often runs wild. In fact, they may have a problem at times distinguishing fantasy from reality. They tend to go with their emotions and instincts rather than their rational and intellect. Because they often live in a dream world, they may be impractical or lazy. They may also lack confidence in themselves at times which leads them to be loners.

Pisceans love aromatic massages. They crave psychological warmth which can be brought on by oils such as Bergamot, Jasmine and Frankincense.

Bergamot
Bergamot has a citrus aroma that is both fruity and sweet, with a warm, spicy, floral quality. It is known as ‘nature’s prozac’ and is revered for its relaxing properties. Bergamot is a heart-warming essential oil and can help to gently relieve sadness, depression and grief.

Jasmine
Jasmine is  the best essential oil to inspire confidence because it is emotionally warming and uplifting. It has stimulating anti-depressant properties that can help those suffering from a lack of confidence, vacillation, indecision and lethargy.

Aromatherapy Star Sign – Sagittarius (23 November – 22 December)

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Sagittarius Aromatherapy Star SignRuler: Jupiter
Colour: Blue
Element: Fire
Season: Summer
Aromatic: Ylang Ylang, Cinnamon and Rose

The Sagittarius Personality

Sagittarians were born under a fire sign. Sagittarians do not like being tied down, they are free spirits with a warm, friendly personality and an independent mind. They are optimistic and look for the good in their friends and families. With such an approach to life they are very popular. Sagittarians don’t get side tracked by the small details and distractions of life, they see the bigger picture and look to the future without fear. They are often very knowledgeable and are the type of person that people go to when they feel they need help. This makes them exceptionally good therapists, however, the negative side of this is that they can take on too much work or literally take on board the problems or aches and pains of their client’s. Sagittarians are very straightforward and say what they mean so friends trust them. The downside of that is sometimes they speak without thinking and inadvertently upset people.

Sagittarians are free spirits and thrive on opportunity and challenge and support that characteristic in others, which is another reason they are drawn to complementary therapy. Warn and generous, Sagittarians are like the archer, they aim their arrows far into the distance, they look for fun and are eager for adventure.

Aromatherapy perfume for Sagittarians

Ingredients:
20 drops Rose essential oil (reflects and enhances your natural warmth and loving personality)
8 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil (to lift the spirits and counteract irritability)
2 drops Cinnamon essential oil (warm and nurturing)
8 drops Lemon essential oil (a yellow colour complementing the red of the rose and reflecting the colour of fire – helps with focus to control the free spirit element of Sagittarians that can sometimes get them into trouble)
15 mls grain alcohol (vodka)
20 mls of Orange Flower Water (also called Orange Flower Hydrolat or Neroli Hydrolat)

Instructions:
Add the essential oils to the grain alcohol. Place in a spray bottle or a cologne bottle and top up to 35ml with Orange Flower Water. Ylang Ylang (cananga odorata)
Ylang Ylang, known as the ‘flower of flowers’ in folklore, is a sweet floral oil that will lift the spirits and counteract general irritability. Sagittarians like it because it has an element of shared joy and has a positive effect on the psyche just like they do on their friends. It is a popular treatment for insomnia and depression, slowing down breathing and helping to reduce panic-related palpitations. In the Philippines where it originates, the ylang ylang flower is much revered and historically the oil, which is extracted from the magnificent flowers, has been blended with coconut oil and used to fight malaria and to prevent wounds from becoming infected.

Cinnamon (cinnamomum zeylanicum)
Cinnamon is a very warm oil with an affinity to fire, and as Sagittarius is a fire sign it is the perfect choice. Cinnamon shares other sagittarian characteristics in that it is robust and has a positive effect on other oils in terms of lifting the perfume. It also has a scent that lasts a long time into the future which is aligned with the sign of Sagittarius i.e. the archer firing arrows far into the future. The benefits of Cinnamon have been recognised since ancient times and it has also been used as a perfume and incense. It is warming for the body and uplifting for the mind, helping to soothe nervous exhaustion and feelings of failure. It is also used to ease a sluggish digestion, aches and pains and a shivering fever and is beneficial for stiff joints and muscles due to age or over-exertion. It is also warming for areas of poor circulation and is comforting to those who feel distressed. Cinnamon has been regarded as a ‘precious oil’ by many cultures and as such it makes a luxurious addition to any massage, room fragrance or bathing blend.

Rose (rosa centifolia)
Rose like a Sagittarian is kind and friendly and lifts the spirits of all that come into contact with it. Rose comes in all the colours of the flame making it an ideal match for the fire signs. Rose oil, which is extracted from the petals by distillation or solvents, is in our personal opinion beyond compare for treating stress related conditions, particularly depression and anxiety. It has a very gentle but strong uplifting effect on the psyche and a balancing effect which can help individuals to see problems in proportion. Many Aromatherapists believe that rose can mimic the effect of hormones so it is often used to treat psychological problems linked to female bodily functions such menstruation or child birth e.g. PMS or post natal depression.

Q&A: Aromatherapy and the 4 Elements

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

The Four Astrological ElementsQ: What are the ‘elements’ and how can I incorporate them into my aromatherapy?

A: Ancient healers believe that our universe is based on four basic elements. These are Air, Earth, Fire and Water. Holistic healers who align themselves with spiritual healing (probably all of us on some level) believe that understanding each element and what it represents helps us in directing and maximising the impact of our healing powers on ourselves or others.

To connect to any of the elements and their higher power, or to benefit from their influence on your character and natural abilities, then use any of the following essential oils linked to that element, either in the bath, in a burner or in a massage blend.

Air: Air is the element of mental activity, focus, thoughts, reason and intellect, knowledge and persuasion. It has a connection to The Creator.

Air Essential Oils: Rose,  Frankincense, Violet, Myrrh, Yarrow.

Fire: Fire represents energy, inspiration, motivation, passion, enthusiasm and desire. It is an initiator for transformation, rejuvenation, courage and confidence. It has a connection to personal power and strength.

Fire Essential Oils: Black Pepper, Orange, Ginger, Basil.

Water: Water cleanses, nourishes and reflects. Water is the element of love, peace, purification, emotional release, inner reflection, and healing. It has a connection to to ‘knowing/intuition’.

Water Essential Oils: Jasmine, Chamomile, Lemon, Sandalwood.

Earth: Earth is the foundation for all the other elements. It is the element of strength, commitment, substance, prosperity, growth, patience, tolerance and stability. It has a connection to life purpose and family roots.

Earth Essential Oils: Ho Leaf, Cedarwood, Geranium, Rosewood.

The Scorpio Personality
Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac and represented by the scorpion. Scorpios are truly the contradicting sign. Scorpios are often mysterious because their true feelings run so deep and they keep their emotions hidden. They are very intuitive. They have determination and loyalty and are popular leaders. They are very adaptable, often changing careers and going down new paths. Scorpios are very loyal friends, but can be possessive. Instructions:
Add the essential oils to the grain alcohol. Place in a spray bottle or a cologne bottle and top up to 50ml with Rosewater.

Peppermint (Menthe Piperita)
Peppermint distilled from the flowers and leaves of the herb is an inexpensive and very useful oil when used to treat stress-related conditions. It is believed to have ‘cephalic’ properties. It stimulates the hippocampus at the centre of the brain, facilitating focused concentration and clarity of thought. It is therefore ideal for individuals whose stress symptoms are overwhelming them to the point where they cannot think straight or concentrate. The other benefit of Peppermint as a stimulant is that it can counteract feelings of fatigue. It is particularly useful to scent the car because it can help to maintain driver alertness. It is also an effective painkiller and is frequently cited by aromatherapists as an excellent remedy for tension headaches and migraine. Evidence from the interior of Egyptian tombs dating back to 300BC has shown that the medicinal properties of Peppermint have been recognised since early civilisation. The name Peppermint is derived from the Latin word ‘mente’ meaning thought, because the Romans used Peppermint as a tonic for the brain. The Greeks, however, claim that the name Peppermint is derived from ‘minthe’ who was a mythological lover of Pluto and whom Pheresphone beat to the ground and killed in a fit of jealousy. On the spot where she died, the herb sprung up, which has since borne her name. Because of this the Greeks believed that the herb could ‘stir up passions’ and they forbade their warriers to eat it in case it diverted their attentions from battle. Conversely, the Jews historically scented the floors of their synagogues with mint because they believed that it helped to purify the mind in readiness of prayer.

Lemon (Citrus Limon)
Lemon has long been respected for its ability to lift the spirits and is often recommended for stress-related fatigue. It also boosts mental performance and can be used by students or drivers to maintain concentration and alertness. It has an affinity with the respiratory system and helps to treat viral infections including those passed via air conditioning in aeroplanes and offices. Lemon is also a powerful antiseptic but care must be taken if the skin is sensitive.

Lavender (Lavendula Angustifolia)
Lavender essential oil is distilled from the flowers and leaves of the herb and is a very well known, widely used and inexpensive essential oil which is an effective anti-depressant. It is a good “balancer” so it is useful in helping people to recover from mood swings, is a well known treatment for insomnia and is equally good for relieving tension headaches. It has a restorative, tonic effect which makes it useful for treating individuals with debilitating fatigue or lethargy and it is an effective pain killer and anti-spasmodic so it is valuable in treating tension related “aches & pains” of a muscular nature. The name derives from the Roman Lavare which means “to cleanse”. It refers to the Roman custom of scenting baths with the leaves and flowers of the plant. Matthiole the Sixth Century Botanist regarded lavender flowers as most effective against conditions of melancholy. Lavender was popular in the monastic medicinal gardens of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and even earlier than that, in the twelfth century, Abbotess Hildegarde dedicated a whole chapter in her herbal to the medicinal uses of lavender. Lavender has been used since pagan times to purify the air and the mind. This is linked to another of its pagan uses which was to drive out wicked spirits and, later on, witches. Gerard in his Sixteenth Century Herbal said that the flowers helped to cure “lovesickness” and keep one chaste. However in the seventeenth century,  prostitutes would wear a sprig of Lavender to advertise their trade. The Victorians thought that it was an excellent headache cure and would often wear a sprig under their hats.

Chamomile (Chamaemelum Nobile)
Chamomile, distilled from the herbal flowers, has been used for over 2000 years for treating nervous complaints. It is therefore one of the best essential oils available for treating anxiety and insomnia, as it has both a calming and antidepressant effect. It has a profoundly balancing effect on the emotions which makes it ideal for the hyperactive, workaholic types or chronic worriers. It is a useful oil for treating stress-related skin conditions such as allergies and eczema and it is also generally believed to stimulate the immune system, making it useful for people who tend to succumb to ‘bugs’ when they are working hard. Its name derives from the Greek ‘kamai’ meaning ground apple because of its fresh fruity scent. It was called Maythen by the Saxons and was revered as one of their nine sacred herbs, later being adopted by the Christians and dedicated to Saint Anne who was the mother of the Virgin Mary. In the language of flowers chamomile stands for ‘patience in adversity’. It is often known as the ‘plants physician’ because it seems to improve the health of the plants within its immediate vicinity.

Rose (rosa centifolia)
Rose essential oil, which is extracted from rose petals by distillation or solvents, is in my personal opinion beyond compare for treating stress related conditions, particularly depression and anxiety. It has a very gentle but strong, uplifting effect on the psyche and a balancing effect which can help individuals to “see problems in proportion”. Many aromatherapists believe that Rose can mimic the effect of hormones so it is often used to treat psychological problems linked to female bodily functions such menstruation or child birth, e.g. PMS or post natal depression.

Geranium (pelargonium graveolens)
Geranium essential oil has a close affinity with the female system and is therefore a popular oil for the aromatherapy beginner as well as the professional. It helps to treat hormonally unbalanced skin, broken capillaries, blemishes and bruises and is a gentle insect repellent. It also works on the mind to ease grinding teeth, nervous tension, mood swings, irritability, anger and female rages, while soothing period-related pain and problems, settling the cycle after miscarriage or preparing the body to conceive. Geranium is emotionally soothing and has a fabulous scent that makes it ideal for room fragrancing.

Clary Sage (salvia sclarea)
Clary Sage essential oil has a euphoric effect which makes it a useful oil for treating stress-related nervous tension and fatigue. Some people find it helpful in the treatment of migraine and it can also reduce pain associated with back ache and muscle stiffness. The medicinal application of Clary Sage began prior to the birth of Christ. The Egyptians used it as a cure for infertility whilst the Greeks and Romans believed that it could prolong human life. It was one of the Anglo Saxons’ nine sacred herbs and by the sixteenth century it was grown in every medicinal herbal garden. It became known as ‘clear eye’ as it was believed to cure eyesight problems. Under the guise of its therapeutic properties it was often added to beer and wine, however it was possibly appreciated more for the fact that it enhanced the effect of alcohol, making weak beer seem more potent.
