Essential oils for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)This month I thought I would talk about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression affecting about 2 million people in the UK, and more than 12 million people across Northern Europe. The condition is more common in women than men and most likely to develop in people aged 18 to 30; it tends to start in Autumn, as the days become shorter and there is reduced exposure to sunlight, is at its peak in the winter months, and starts to improve as the days become longer in Spring. The two main symptoms are low mood and a lack of interest in life. Other symptoms may include feelings of irritability, despair, guilt, low self-esteem, indecisiveness, tearfulness, stress, anxiety, tiredness, lethargy, lack of concentration and being less active than normal.

Base oil of the month - Jojoba



Base oil of the month - JojobaAccurately speaking, Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis) is a wax not an oil - even though it acts like any other base oil. On a molecular level, it is a chain of mono - unsaturated liquid wax esters. It is a golden colour when in its pure unprocessed form, and totally clear and colourless when processed. It is extracted from the seeds of the plant, which is indigenous to the USA and Mexico, however most commercial farms are now in Israel and Argentina.

Essential oil of the month - GrapefruitGrapefruit essential oil (Citrus x paradisi) is a versatile aromatherapy oil with a wonderfully refreshing citrus, green scent. The oil is yellow to orange/green in colour and is normally expressed from the peel of the ripe grapefruit - although some companies do steam distill the oil too. The cold-pressed (expressed) oil is the highest quality but it does oxidise fairly rapidly.
